THE BIG IDEA
The Plus/Delta feedback tool helps you avoid negative feedback and focus on helping the coachee achieve more desirable results. It helps analyze a particular action of the coachee and how to improve it. Plus/Delta has two simple parts: the plus section and the delta section.
In the Plus section, focus on what is already working well for the coachee with this action. Focus on specific behaviors and strategies.
Delta is the Greek letter for D, the symbol for change. In this section, don’t go negative, but focus on what could be done to improve
When using this tool, it’s important to remember to stay positive – rather than say things like, “What went wrong?” or “Why didn’t you do…?” say,
“What could be improved?” or “What could you do differently next time?” Also, always do the steps in order – start with Plus and then move into Delta
EXAMPLES
Here’s some examples of proper Plus/Delta language:
In the Plus section: “You’re doing well. I’ve noticed you use patients’ names much more frequently”
This feedback is specific and positive. Avoid giving nonspecific praise like simply saying, “You’re great!”
In the Delta section: “What do you feel you could improve?”
It is much less productive to go negative – that’s why we focus on “Delta” rather than “Negative” with this tool. Say things like this rather than things like “What went wrong?”
